Not sleeping well can really cause us to become overly anxious making us worry, and when you're pregnant you need all the sleep you can get.

It is natural to wake several times a night for a toilet stop, but getting back to sleep should be easy.

When you're pregnant your body feels more heated than usual, so it's this extra heat in TCM theory that can keep you awake. It doesn't let your mind shut down and settle you into your heart to reach that good deep sleep.

How acupuncture works...

So acupuncture is very good at releasing this heat to help your mind and heart to connect and settle enough for you to sleep.

If there is anxiousness and worry then your kidneys can be producing too much adrenaline. We can support your kidneys to break this cycle which will calm and relax your mind, this will help you to fall asleep naturally. 

Having acupuncture rebalances the body and naturally makes you more relaxed, it's with this state that sleep will come easier for you.

Tips...

  • Lavender on your pillow or in a steam diffuser or oil burner at the later point of your afternoon/night
  • Chamomile tea to drink around tea time 
  • Turning the lights down low and turning off all media half an hour before you go to bed helps the brain to change states faster
  • Reading a book in bed often helps sleep arrive
  • Gentle exercise throughout your week - as sometimes if we don't move enough the body holds onto that excess energy and it can cause us to lay awake at night
  • Listening to a whole body relaxation practice while you are in bed or when you wake during the night
  • Talking about how you're feeling and what is worrying you with a friend who can listen or a professional counsellor or mid wife will also help 

Don't just lay there awake, sometimes reading or legs up the wall or doing something creative can shift the energy enough for you to sleep.

As the last weeks of your pregnancy approach waking up throughout the night is also nature's way of preparing you for breast feeding throughout the night. But if you're not getting off to sleep or just generally can't get to sleep, then acupuncture is for you.
