How to use Moxa
Firstly two things you must know:
1. If the burning moxa touches your skin it will burn you severely
2. If you don't extinguish it thoroughly it can re-ignite itself
An easy way to light moxa:
1. Light a good size candle up and put the tip of the moxa into this flame
2. Gas stove top works well
Moxa will have ash build up on the end you're burning so like a cigarette it will need to be tapped into a container. Always have a cup or glass of water to tap ash into just in case amber comes off with the ash.
Age of applying moxa: 16 years and up, but can be applied to anyone at any age after consulting with your practitioner.
How to put out moxa:
So always watch while you are using moxa as it can be easy to get distracted and this is when burns can happen.
Put moxa under running water or fill a cup with sand and put the tip in the sand. These methods will extinguish it safely.
When you go to re-light your moxa stick just snap off the top burnt bit so then it will light easier for next time.
